MOM'S RED CABBAGE

1 head of red cabbage, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 cup water
2 cups chopped apples
1 1/4 tsp salt
dash of pepper
2 TBSP bacon fat

Heat bacon drippings in Dutch oven. Brown onion till medium brown. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cover and cook on low heat till done.
